FAQs

How many guests can I host at my event?

Guest counts vary by the room(s) you choose and vary from 8 guests up to 52.

How do you handle beverages for my event?

Heron House beverages, which include wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. Our current liquor license does not permit hard alcohol to be served.

How do you handle food for my event?

You are welcome to choose your own caterer and have them deliver food for your event.  You are welcome to use our pantry for set up and it is acceptable for guests to enjoy it in common spaces or the playing rooms.  Heron House asks that you and/or  your caterer is responsible for set-up and clean-up of catered food service.

I plan to have guests at my event who don't know how to play. Can I incorporate a lesson into my event for those that need it?

Yes! The fabulous instructors here at Heron House would be happy to support your event, availability permitting. Note that mahjong lessons for true beginners typically takes four full hours of training time, which in many cases would exceed the length of your event. A 90-minute mini-lesson is available in these cases for an additional fee that will vary based on the number of participants. It should be noted however, that not all guests will be competent in mahjong play after only one mini-lesson. It merely gives them initial exposure to tiles, suites, objectives and routines for play. Training cards will be provided for guests who are taking a mini lesson.

May I host an event where everyone already knows how to play?

Yes!  We welcome experienced players and will give you space and time to enjoy the game and each other.

What do my guests need to bring?

Everyone should bring an open mind and great attitude to have fun. Guests who know how to and plan to play mahjong should bring their own 2026 playing card. For those that don't have one and need one, we'll have them available for purchase on site. Tiles, mats and racks will all be provided for the duration of your event at no additional costs. Training cards will be provided for guests who need are taking a mini lesson.

Can I have an event that just uses the space without guests playing mahjong?

Yes! We welcome private events like baby showers, retirement parties or other festivities and know you may choose to not play mahjong in lieu of other activities you have planned. No problem. We can move tables and chairs to the perimeter of the rooms but will not be able to move furniture from room to room to accommodate those activities.

When and how do I pay for my event?

Once a verbal agreement is made about the scope of your event and you have agreed with the quote that has been provided, you will be asked to sign an event contract. 50% of the event will need to be paid to hold your space rental. The remainder of your balance will be due the day of your event.
